Sliabh Liag, also known as Slieve League, is one of County Donegal’s truly iconic visitor attractions. Situated on the south west coast of County Donegal, Sliabh Liag is said to be one of the highest and finest marine cliffs in Europe.
From humble beginnings as primitive flames to their automation today, these flashing lights have come a long way.
The Irish Landmark Trust is an educational charity with a mission to save, share and sustain Ireland’s built heritage.
Our vessel is a 10m rigid inflatable boat built in 2020 and fitted with a 350hp engine plus auxiliary motor - she holds a P3 passenger licence for 12 passengers and 2 crew, and is fitted with the latest communications, navigation and safety equipment.
The boat trip to Rotten Island is an easy passage within Killybegs Harbour, even when the weather is poor. The boat trip to St. John’s Point will only be available when the weather and sea conditions are deemed suitable by our Boat Skipper.
You will be provided with a life jacket while at sea, which you must wear, and which will be sanitised before each trip.
Your visit to the Lighthouse Tower will be supervised by our Experienced Guides – please pay close attention to the advice and directions they provide to ensure you have a safe trip.
You need to be moderately fit to climb the Lighthouse tower - you must be able to walk up steps from the sea landing and to climb the lighthouse tower steps (in total approx. 30 steps or 20m at Rotten Island, and approx. 40 steps or 30m at St. John’s Point).
The trip is not suitable for children under 7 years of age or less than 1.2m tall. Older persons may find the short Rotten Island trip easier than the open sea passage to St. John’s Point, depending on health and fitness.
We do not recommend our trips if: you are pregnant or if you have a heart condition or suffer acute backache problems or have consumed alcohol - people in these circumstances may experience significant discomfort due to the jockey style seating on our boat / due to the natural motion of the sea and waves / due to disembarking from boat to sea landing at the Lighthouses / due to climbing the steps inside the Lighthouses. Because of the nature of the vessel’s construction and use, it cannot accommodate wheelchairs.
Wear warm clothing including trousers and a waterproof coat, with comfortable walking shoes. It can be cold at sea even when shore temperatures are relatively high. Sun glasses and sun screen are advisable when the weather is very good. You will be provided with a life jacket while at sea, which you must wear.
Children must be aged 7 years or older, and must be at least 1.2m tall.
Please see location map on our website. Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled departure time. The assembly point is at the head of the breakwater on the Small Craft Harbour at Killybegs Marina – look out for the Killybegs Sea Safari yellow flag as our meeting place. Parking is available along the shore road opposite the marina.
There are no toilet facilities on the boat or at Rotten Island (this trip takes about 1hr 30minutes). There are public portaloo toilets at St. John’s Point provided by Donegal County Council.
No, there no changing facilities at Killybegs Marina.
No. While we love dogs, unfortunately our RIB style vessel cannot accommodate them.
You may cancel your booking up to 24 hours prior to departure for a full refund. Bookings cancelled up to 12 hours prior to departure will receive a voucher to rebook. No refunds or gift vouchers are available for bookings cancelled less than 12 hours prior to departure.
We may cancel your scheduled trip with as little as 2 hours’ notice in the event of poor weather or dangerous sea conditions, in which case you will have the option of a full refund, or voucher to rebook. Cancellation at such short notice is only likely to arise in the case of boat trips to St. John’s Point as it requires open sea passage – this policy also applies in the case of group bookings for bespoke open sea boat trips. The Rotten Island boat trip is within the harbour area and is unlikely to be cancelled. Sea conditions generally in June to August are usually good on most days but occasionally the weather might not cooperate.
Killybegs Sea Safari also reserves the right to cancel any trip due to breaches of safety directions from crew, government health & safety guideline changes, weather reports or any unforeseen circumstances.
